This was a very interesting article for me to read because up until now, I feel that everything we have been discussing has been based on very idealistic scenarios. It seems that every problem has had an immediate, calculated answer. I appreciated all of the attention Brophy gave to making sure we, as teachers, would know how to implement some more practical teaching methods in our classrooms.
One of the practical methods of helping students included allowing other teachers, parents, and students to help any discouraged student. I think this is a crucial method of tutoring a needy student – there is only so much that one teacher can do in a class of 25 people, and sometimes the individual attention a student needs is simply not possible. By turning to other influences in a child’s life, we are allowing for more meaningful connections to be made as these other models might be able to draw from personal experiences in the student’s life to better explain a concept. For example, when working out a math problem with a student, it might help to know the student’s specific interests and stories from the real world to lock the knowledge in and make it more meaningful, and therefore more accessible.
Brophy mentioned something that I had never given much thought to before: coping. The most interesting concept I took away from this reading was the idea of coping goals versus success goals. Brophy says the following about failure syndrome students:
“failure syndrome students, especially those with learned helplessness symptoms, do not so much need a steady diet of success as they need to learn how to cope with frustration and failure productivity” (p. 135).
The concept was first mentioned in the “attribution retraining” section explanation (attribution retraining refers to changing students’ tendencies to attribute failure to their lack of ability). Brophy states that the success of the student is good, but it is not sufficient to change their attitude toward learning or their mechanisms they use to process information.
Coping has always seemed like a negative term to me, conjuring up the image of using the bare minimum effort to achieve one’s goals in the face of eminent failure. But Brophy uses the term to refer to an attainable model of how to handle failure. He refers to the idea of “controlled exposure to failure” (p. 131) as a means to get these students accustomed to appropriate, constructive responses to failure. This view of using coping mechanisms put a positive, realistic twist to the view I already had. I always assumed that students should look at models of success, and then incorporate the successful behaviors into what they do. Brophy’s view on coping makes much more sense.
